"Explore the rich history of Kentrochori."

Kentrochori (official: Kentrochorion, until 1933 Doumaergion and Vouidomagergeio) is a village and the seat of the homonymous community in the Municipality of Agios Vasilios, in the Regional Unit of Rethymno, Crete. It is located 37.5 kilometers from Rethymno and is built at an altitude of 530 meters on the southern slopes of the Kentros mountain.

According to a local legend during the Byzantine era, there lived in the region a noblewoman named Maria. She owned a vast expanse of land from Mount Kentros to the southern sea. To cultivate this land, she brought oxen and plows. Both the homes of the plowmen and the stables for the oxen and other animals were located in the area of the present village, leading to its name, Vouidomagergeio, due to the presence of oxen and the kitchens of the plowmen. Maria herself built the nearby Monastery of Agios Pnevmatos, where she lived until her death.

The earliest mention of the village dates back to a 1301 contract drafted by the notary of Chandaka, where it is referred to as Vudomaierio. In 1577, Francesco Barozzi mentions the village as Vuidhomagiergio in the province of Agios Vasileios. The Venetian census of 1583 by Kastrofylakas records it as Vuidhomargiergio with 60 inhabitants. Basilicata also mentions the village in 1630, using the name Vuidho Magiero. In the Ottoman census of 1659, it is referred to as Vidu Mayeryo, with 20 houses.
