Lefkogia

The Municipal Department of Lefkogia includes the settlements of Lefkogia, Ammoudi, Gianniou, and Skoinaria. According to the 2001 census, it has a population of 369 residents.

Lefkogia is believed to derive its name from the white soil or the abundance of white flowers in the meadow and school field. Others suggest a connection to the fields of the White, a bride from the Paleologos family. Tradition holds that the village was founded by Achilles Tzes, an exile from Constantinople, whose wife belonged to the Paleologos family.

Situated on level ground between two large streams that converge at the western edge of the village, Lefkogia is surrounded by fertile slopes. The origins of the village remain uncertain, but historical records mention its role as the location of one of Crete's earliest cooperatives in 1915. Lefkogia was also home to one of the first telephones serving the Gialia villages.

This small village, located near the Libyan Sea at an altitude of 90m, is approximately 35 km from Rethymno and only 1500m from the sea. With hills to the south, including Modis and the peak of Timios Stavros, and the Asomata mountains to the north, Lefkogia comes to life in the summer months due to tourism. Its proximity to beautiful beaches makes it a popular choice for visitors. About 3.5 km from the village square, Skoinaria is a tranquil beach known for its spectacular underwater scenery, attracting diving enthusiasts. Lefkogia serves as an ideal base to explore nearby beaches like Damnoni and Ammoudi, both frequented by numerous visitors annually.
