Agios Vasilios is a municipal unit with a population of 130 residents according to the 2001 census. Agios Vasilios is located at an altitude of 310 meters and is 23 kilometers away from Rethymno. From Rethymno, we follow the route to Spili, and when we reach Bale, we take the first right road that leads us to the village.
The Turks called it 'Neus Agios Vasilios' because it was then the center of the province, and they wanted to distinguish it from the homonymous main province. It is said that it took its name from the homonymous old church in the village. It is also said that there was an old Byzantine fortress named 'Kato Syvritos' (Lower Syvritos), the location of which has not been determined. The region of Agios Vasilios took its name from this village
