It is a village and the seat of the homonymous community in the Municipality of Agios Vasilios, in the Regional Unit of Rethymno in Crete. It is located 26.5 kilometers from Rethymno and is built at an altitude of 300 meters. Stelios Spanakis notes that its name is etymologized from the words "mixi" (mixture) and "rouma" (the stream in Cretan dialect) and interprets it as the village being built at the confluence of streams, hence the correct spelling is with a "γ" (gamma).
In the location of Kosteli, remnants of a Minoan settlement have been found. The village is mentioned by Francesco Barozzi in 1577 as Mixoruma in the province of Agios Vasilios. In the Venetian census of 1583 by Kastrofylakas, it is recorded as Mixoruma with 64 inhabitants and 16 owed labor obligations. Vasilikata also mentions the village in 1630, using the name Mixoruma. In the Ottoman census of 1659, 8 houses are documented.
In the census of 1834 conducted by the Egyptians, it is listed along with ten other villages in the region. In the census of 1881, it was part of the municipality of Lampe and had 126 residents, all Christians. In the census of 1900, it had 146 inhabitants. In the census of 1920, it was designated as the seat of a rural municipality. In 1925, it was designated as the seat of a homonymous community until the Kapodistrian administrative division when the village was annexed to the Municipality of Lampe. In 1951, Upper Myxorrouma was recognized as an independent settlement and was separately recorded. Upper Myxorrouma is located approximately 300 meters from (Lower) Myxorrouma, which has largely been deserted.
In Upper Mixorrouma, visitors can find a bakery with various baked goods, a gas station, three traditional cafes, and a snack bar surrounded by museum items of old agricultural tools and household equipment.
Additionally, they can explore and purchase handmade basketry items from the two remaining basket weavers.
Entering Upper Mixorrouma from the side of Rethymno, there is a right turn that leads to Agia Pelagia at 300 meters and Fratti at 3 kilometers.
